Squat assessment: depth from the side, knees from the front
Leave the phone in one spot. Your client squats once side-on and once facing the camera. The side view records how deep they go; the front view records whether the knees move inward.

What it measures
From the side, MovePath measures knee flexion of the leg nearest the camera at the deepest point of each rep and averages it. Trunk-to-thigh angle, trunk lean and shin angle are recorded too.
From the front, it measures how far the knees move inward partway down, minus the standing value. If they don't move inward, it says so. Because it is read from a single phone view, it is shown as a reference indicator.
Depth only shows from the side, and knees moving inward only shows from the front. So the same spot is used twice, just facing a different way.
Where to put the phone
- Lens at hip height (0.8–1.0 m)Phone upright on a tripod about 3 m away, 1× lens, head to toe in frame with space above and below. Before each test the app checks camera height and phone tilt, and tells you what to fix if they're off.
- Arms crossed on the chestHands on the hips hide the hip points. Fitted bottoms work best.
- Side first, then front, 5 reps eachFive squats side-on, then, with the phone left where it is, five more facing the camera. Practise before pressing start.
- Solo modeOnce your client is in place and passes the set-up check, the 3-2-1 starts on its own with voice prompts. No walking back to the phone.
What the report shows
- Side: knee flexionAverage across reps and the deepest rep, plus trunk-to-thigh angle, trunk lean and shin angle.
- Front: knees moving inwardLeft and right values (reference indicator) and the knee-gap ratio at the deepest point, or "no inward movement".
- Change since last timeOn a re-test, the first sentence states the change since last time, and a trend chart shows the same test over time.
- PhotosThe deepest point of each rep, face blurred. Taken only with the client's photo consent and kept only on the trainer's phone and in the PDF. Report links carry no photos.
- Test video ProRecord the test, replay it with joint angles, and play it side by side with the first one. Videos stay on the trainer's phone.
Reference data
There is no age- and sex-based reference table for this test in the report yet. Instead, the report shows the change since the same client's previous test. We only add tables whose numbers we have checked against the original paper.
Please note
MovePath is not a medical device. This test records measurements to guide exercise; it is not a diagnosis. App readings may differ from a goniometer, tape measure or stopwatch. Use them to compare the same client's first test with today's, measured the same way.
