Push-up test: maximum reps with good form

Following the ACSM protocol, MovePath counts push-ups done continuously with good form and no time limit. From the side, the phone watches elbow angle and a straight body line, and reps that lose form don't count.

What it measures

Only reps with good form count. Reps with the hips sagging or piked are listed separately as not counted.

The test ends after two non-counted reps in a row, a rest of more than 4 seconds with arms straight, or 3 minutes. The report says which one ended it.

Full push-ups and knee push-ups go in separate places in the report and are never compared with each other.

When clients count for themselves, the standard drifts from rep to rep. Counting by the same rule is what makes before-and-after numbers comparable.

Where to put the phone

  • Side view, phone 30–50 cm off the floorThe client's side in the middle of the frame, 2–3 m away. Landscape works too.
  • Shoulders to feet in frameFor knee push-ups, shoulders to knees. Hands directly under the shoulders.
  • Start in a straight-arm plankOn the beep, lower until the chest is near the floor (elbows about 90°), then push back to straight arms.

What the report shows

  • RepsReps with good form, time taken, and why the test ended.
  • Reps not countedThe number of reps that lost form, listed separately.
  • Change since last timeCompared only with the same style (full or knees), with a trend chart.
  • PhotosThe lowest point of each rep, face blurred. Taken only with the client's photo consent and kept only on the trainer's phone and in the PDF. Report links carry no photos.
  • Test video ProRecord the test, replay it with joint angles, and play it side by side with the first one. Videos stay on the trainer's phone.

Reference data

There is no age- and sex-based reference table for this test in the report yet. Instead, the report shows the change since the same client's previous test. We only add tables whose numbers we have checked against the original paper.

Please note

MovePath is not a medical device. This test records measurements to guide exercise; it is not a diagnosis. App readings may differ from a goniometer, tape measure or stopwatch. Use them to compare the same client's first test with today's, measured the same way.

This is a Pro test. Pro opens after launch, and early access sign-ups hear about it first.
